SELEX Sistemi Integrati to manage about 50% of Chinese air
traffic with new contract for civil radars
SELEX Sistemi Integrati,
a Finmeccanica company, has become the first air traffic control
(ATC) systems supplier in China following a further contract the
company has recently signed with the Civil Aviation Administration
of China (CAAC). The $9m supply is with regard to the installation
of six mode S secondary radars.
Under the new contract, SELEX Sistemi
Integrati, which has sold several air traffic radar systems in
China during the past 20 years, will equip a total of 50 airports,
which are collectively responsible for managing about 50% of the
Chinese air traffic.
The systems will be located in six different
sites belonging to three of the seven Flight Information Regions
(FIR) in which the Chinese territory is divided. In particular,
four of the six sensors sold will be located in the North East
flight region – in Lonjing, Youyi, Shuangcheng and Huangshanzi –
with a further one in Guilin in the Central South region, and
another one in the North West at Muzhailing.
The new supply will be integrated with the
four primary radars – one in L and three in S band – all equipped
with solid state technology, and four second S mode radars, which
the company sold to the same customer last March.
The contract represents an immediate
reconfirmation of the trust in SELEX Sistemi Integrati’s systems by
the CAAC, which also visited the company premises in Rome recently.
SELEX Sistemi Integrati has a long tradition of supplying its air
traffic management products into China for more than 30 years. One
of the most recent contracts dates back to 2003, since when the
company has been working on logistic support and on upgrading
systems in operation throughout the Chinese territory, including
during the 2008 Olympic Games.
