SELEX Sistemi Integrati participates in Dubai Airshow 2011

Dubai, 13-17 November 2011 – SELEX Sistemi Integrati, a Finmeccanica company, is taking part in the 2011 edition of the Dubai Airshow which takes place within the Airport Expo, in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The company will be showing a video illustrating its KRONOS system, the Blueshield system, consoles for a turn key airport solution, the Mission Planning system, and the Masterzone.

Key Projects in UAE

SELEX Sistemi Integrati and Abu Dhabi Ship Building established a joint venture in UAE named Abu Dhabi Systems Integration (ADSI) aimed at providing a broad range of defence systems, products and services. The joint venture is involved in the Baynunah programme, which was set up for the development and production of six 70m Corvettes for UAE Navy in which SELEX Sistemi Integrati has a lead integration and supplier role to the local Abu Dhabi Ship Building. Within this programme SELEX Sistemi Integrati is responsible for the Combat System Integration, for the supply of the Command Management System IPN-S/R and Fire Control System NA25XM. Fully successful Factory Acceptance Tests of the main systems have been carried out.

Through ADSI, SELEX Sistemi Integrati was also selected by the UAE Navy to equip new and existing Fast Patrol Boats. The agreement is part of the Ghannatha programme to supply 12 new Missile Patrol boats and retrofit a further 12 units of the same class. In addition to the compact Command Management System, SELEX Sistemi Integrati will supply the EO FCS Medusa MK4B system, while ADSI will be responsible for the integration and supply of the combat system.

SELEX Sistemi Integrati was also selected by the UAE Navy for a number of new challenging projects such as the ABU DHABI class Corvette project and the FALAJ-2 class OPV. Within the ABU DHABI class programme, SELEX Sistemi Integrati will deliver the IPN-S/R Command Management System, the NA30S Fire Control System, the KRONOS multi-role radar system co-mounted with IFF SIR-M radar, and EO FCS Medusa MK4/B. SELEX Sistemi Integrati is responsible for the functional integration of the combat system. A key element of the contract is the KRONOS multi-role solid-state radar, completely designed and developed by SELEX Sistemi Integrati and based on EMPAR, the naval radar system used by the Italian Navy and other foreign customers.

In early 2010, SELEX Sistemi Integrati was again awarded a contract to supply naval systems to be fitted into the two new stealth patrol vessels known as “Falaj 2”, which have been ordered to Fincantieri by the UAE Navy. Specifically, SELEX Sistemi Integrati has been chosen as a major combat system provider and to integrate the combat system. The agreement also includes an option for two further vessels of the same class. Also in this case the company will provide the IPN-S command management systems, the NA 30S fire control systems, the KRONOS radar systems, and the SIR-M.

Finally SELEX Sistemi Integrati is also delivering six Medusa MK4/B electro optical fire control systems intended for the UAE Coast Guard fast patrol boats.

SELEX Sistemi Integrati’s presence in other countries of the Gulf area

SELEX Sistemi Integrati signed a contract with Qatar for the value of over 105 million dollars to design and provide air traffic control and terminal area manoeuvre systems for the New Doha International Airport. The company also plays a leading role as integrator of all the air traffic and weather control equipments in the new airport. A second contract was signed by the company to provide logistic support activities. In early 2010 SELEX Sistemi Integrati signed a 15 million dollar contract with the Bahrain Civil Aviation Authority (BCAA) for the supply of a primary surveillance radar and two Mode-S secondary surveillance radars at the Bahrain International Airport, making the national airspace management safer and more efficient. A more recent contract was signed in Kuwait for 16 million dollars to provide the Kuwait General directorate of civil aviation with air traffic control systems. In particular, SELEX Sistemi Integrati will equip the international airport of Kuwait City with an ATCR-33/S primary radar, a SIR-S secondary radar and  ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast), a high performance system for en-route, terminal area and airport surveillance applications. Finally, in Yemen SELEX Sistemi Integrati signed a 20 million euro contract with the Yemenite Coast Guard for the supply of a VTS system to secure the Yemeni coasts.

KRONOS®

KRONOS is a multifunctional C band radar equipped with a full solid-state active phased array antenna which counters new generation threats in every kind of ECM (Electronic Counter Measures) and severe clutter environments. KRONOS is able to expand the missile and air defence also against threats today retained insidious for the national security, such as cruise missiles and low altitude UAVs both when these are employed as stand-alone threats for terroristic attacks in peaceful times and when in use in a multiple deployment, which is typical of attacks brought by military enemies.

The system, thanks to its radar provided with an AESA (Active Electronic Scanned Array) antenna, is able to scan the surrounding space to search for targets, so working as a search radar. Once one or more air threats are identified, it can track them with extreme precision and continuity such as a fire control system. These capabilities are deployed simultaneously and in a very fast an automatic manner.

The KRONOS radar family includes naval and land configurations with the land version available with a fixed and mobile configuration. The 23 KRONOS systems sold by SELEX Sistemi Integrati, both in land and naval version for surveillance and short and medium range air defence, are nowadays in use in several national and international Armed Forces.

Blue Shield®

Blue Shield® is a state of the art C4I system for air surveillance and defence. It allows airspace surveillance as well as the air defense reaction capabilities enhancement. The system integrates different kinds of surveillance radars (Long/Medium range) and weapon systems. Blue Shield is a modular system based on an open architecture that also allows the integration of coastal and border protection systems.

Turn Key Airport

Turn Key Airport is the solution designed to deliver a fully operational airport system in a very short time, based on the fast development of integrated airside and landside systems inside an ad-hoc modular terminal to answer the need of increasing air traffic. This total airport management solution has been structured by SELEX Sistemi Integrati into three main layers that embrace security, safety and services.

Italian Air Force - Mission Support System (IAF-MSS)

The IAF-MSS station is a total planning system providing support for various different aircraft, weapons systems and types of mission, also used for planning the deployment of stand-off missiles, e.g. the Storm Shadow. The IAF-MSS has been designed for the Tornado and AM-X aircraft, and subsequently extended to support C130J, MB339, C27J aircraft and NH90 Tactical Transport Helicopter.

MasterZone

MasterZone is a key component in situation awareness solutions for both defence and homeland security. Based on unattended ground sensors technology, it provides short and long term surveillance of wide areas. The system can generate different types of alarms when a dangerous event occurs, and display the collected information from the sensor network on a Central Monitoring Station.
