Extending the operational capability of Precision Approach
Radar legacy platforms for MOD
SELEX Systems Integration replaced an existing infrastructure
that was unable to support operations, with a high integrity
approach system that delivered several business and regulatory
benefits.
Challenge
The Ministry of Defence (MOD) recognised that
the existing aircraft carrier systems were unable to support the
operation of new aircraft and their requirement to operate in all
weather conditions, by day and at night. In addition, the
operational environment was severely limited.
How SELEX Systems Integration helped
SELEX Systems Integration was contracted to
work closely with several segments of the Defence Equipment &
Support Agency and associated MOD stakeholders (Integrated Project
Teams) in order to achieve the installation of safety-critical,
radar-based aircraft guidance systems into warships.
The project comprised major new shipborne
installations driven by a flexible operational programme demanding
imaginative project management skills, systems engineering and
closely controlled team-work. This project also required:
- Adaptation of COTS design to replicate legacy systems, in
order to minimise operator training, requiring deep domain
expertise and an ability to work closely with the operational
staff
- Managing financial dimension to minimise impact on the
customer's operations while remaining within budget profile
- Managing a stakeholder group comprising diverse skills and
differing companies located at widely separated sites
- Care in selection of skills during the project lifecycle to
ensure that all stakeholder aspirations were recognised and
addressed
- Transparency to enable all parties to adapt to the changing,
operationally-driven, timeline
SELEX Systems Integration developed a high
integrity aircraft approach system and introduced the latest
technology to enable pilots to make approaches in all weather
conditions. These new Precision Approach Radars were then
integrated within the existing command and control
infrastructure.
Benefits
As a result of SELEX Systems Integration's involvement on
the project, the following benefits were delivered:
- The customer was able to meet their latest directives
- Enhanced operational output
- Significant improvement in Flight Safety
- The new Precision Approach Radar has added significant enhanced
capability for warships, with SELEX SI receiving letters of praise
for its performance from the Captain of HMS ARK ROYAL.
