Planning and Simulation in the rail industry

Planning and SimulationSELEX Systems Integration has in-depth knowledge of planning and simulation solutions, and is working with the UK rail industry in this area to deliver key projects. Our planning and simulation capability is based on more than 30 years’ engineering experience, especially in the aerospace industry.

Meeting government demands

SELEX Systems Integration has invested in understanding the issues and regulations faced by the rail planning community.  It has applied this knowledge in combination with new technology to develop a timetable planning solution which has the capability to improve the published timetable and serve as an enabler for Network Rail to meet its investment commitments to the UK government.

Enhancing data quality and reliability

Currently, we are working with Network Rail to implement a new timetable planning solution which will improve:

  • Timetable performance and resilience
  • Network capacity planning and allocation
  • Distribution and publication of timetable data
  • Rail industry collaboration and integration

The effectiveness of the new timetable planning solution will be enhanced by its simulation capability, which will model alternative timetables and infrastructure changes, leading to improvements in timetable resilience and more effective use of network capacity.

The new planning solution will also improve the quality and reliability of the data used by customer-facing stakeholders (for example National Rail website and Train Operators’ websites such as Virgin West Coast, First Great Western, and National Express East Coast) and UK operational stakeholders (such as the signalling community, stations, customer information systems, and automated routing systems).

European rail support

Outside the UK, SELEX Systems Integration is also involved in providing a similar solution to European infrastructure providers. Both the UK and European solutions make use of a timetable planning tool which has been developed by a third party, using SELEX Systems Integration’s analysis to meet the requirements of the UK rail industry.
