Operations Self Assurance - Network Rail
SELEX Systems Integration delivered a user-friendly electronic
system that orchestrated Network Rail's self-assurance process.
This was part of the organisation's drive to improve operational
compliance.
Background
The Operations Self Assurance (OSA) project is part of Network
Rail’s ongoing drive to deliver operational improvements through
the introduction of Business Process Management tools. The OSA
System will replace the organisation’s existing paper-based
assurance processes and align with the existing governance mandate.
The OSA system will enable:
- Improved process efficiency
- Real time visibility of status
- More consistent management
- Improved reporting and auditing of the processes
- Business owned, continuous process improvement
opportunities
Challenge
SELEX Systems Integration was appointed by Network Rail, as part
of its drive to improve operational compliance through more
efficient monitoring via a user friendly electronic system.
What SELEX Systems Integration did
The solution proposed by SELEX Systems Integration uses
Metastorm BPM, a commercially available Business Process Management
tool, to orchestrate the complete self-assurance process. It
completely consumes all the actions of the existing assurance
process, removing the requirement for paper forms. Roles within
Metastorm are then mapped to the existing organisational hierarchy
to reproduce the lines of reporting and oversight. The OSA system
subsequently automatically collects, collates and presents data to
the relevant operational groups.
Benefits
The delivered system is sufficiently configurable to accommodate
the bi-annual review of assurance processes that occur within
Network Rail. With a dedicated project workstream for knowledge
transfer between the developer and the customer’s internal support
service, a flexible solution has been created that will evolve with
the needs of the business.
Testimonial
OSA Senior User, Ian Buckley, said: “Network Rail and SELEX
Systems Integration have worked together in close partnership to
produce a solution to improve operational compliance which will be
at the forefront of Network Rail’s drive to introduce consistent
‘audit solutions’ across functions. Close liaison between end users
and software engineers has resulted in the development of a
fit-for-purpose system.”
