Highlands & Islands become first UK airports to adopt SELEX
Systems Integration’s Distance Measuring Equipment

10 January 2012 – SELEX
Systems Integration Ltd, a Finmeccanica company, has strengthened
its position as one of the UK’s leading providers of Air Traffic
Management (ATM) solutions, after winning the contract to provide
two 1118A Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) to Highlands &
Islands Airports Ltd’s (HIAL) Inverness and Kirkwall airports. This
contract signifies the first use of SELEX Systems Integration’s
DME in the
UK market.
With more than a decade’s
performance in over 600 locations worldwide, the 1118A DME
represents one of SELEX Systems Integration’s best-selling navaids
globally, operating in airports across more than 55 countries.
The DMEs for
Inverness and Kirkwall will be co-located with the Doppler Very
High Frequency Omni-Range (DVOR) at each airport providing both
airports with cutting-edge technology in aviation navigation
tools.
SELEX Systems Integration’s
DME has a
field-proven performance record for en-route and precision approach
landing applications. Available in low power (1118A) and high power
(1119A) configurations, the SELEX DME offers highly reliable
operation, advanced performance, and ease of maintenance. They also
interface with any Instrument Landing System (ILS) and VHF
Omni-Directional Range (VOR) systems available today, and meet or
exceed ICAO Annex 10 Standards.
This contract follows on from
other Air Traffic Management (ATM) contracts recently won by SELEX
Systems Integration. These include airport projects for Bristol,
Jersey, Isle of Man and Southend.
HIAL chose SELEX Systems
Integration as the preferred supplier after the company
demonstrated a flexible approach and assurance that the equipment
would meet the regulator’s strict safety standards
Highlands & Islands Airports
Ltd Head of Operations, Robin MacRae, said: “After a competitive
tendering process, we are very pleased to have appointed SELEX

Islay, Inverness, Kirkwall, Stornoway, Sumburgh, Tiree and Wick.
Our airports are vital to the social and economic welfare of these
areas, and robust and reliable navigational aids are essential to
maintain safe and effective operations.”
SELEX Systems Integration CEO,

our DME to the
UK aviation market, and extending the portfolio of SELEX Systems
Integration’s products in operation in the UK. Throughout 2011 we
have been working with airports across the British Isles to enhance
