SELEX Systems Integration developing Loitering Munition
training
12 January 2010 – SELEX Systems Integration
Ltd, a Finmeccanica company, has started the second phase of
training development for Loitering Munition, in its capacity as the
training service provider for the Fire Shadow Loitering Munition
Weapon System.
SELEX Systems Integration is responsible for
delivering the programme’s through-life training solution. For the
past two years, the company has been providing technical support
and specialist advice to help define the overall programme and its
specific training requirements.
For phase two of the training project, SELEX
Systems Integration will continue to develop the through-life
training in the incremental progress to Full Operational
Capability. This involves undertaking analysis leading to the
production of a Training Implementation Plan; instructional
analysis and design to produce lessons and courses; producing
course computer-aided instruction materials; defining and producing
components of the technical training solution; and developing
components of the classroom synthetic environment.
The Fire Shadow Loitering Munition Weapon
System is being developed by a team which includes complex weapons
suppliers, other defence companies, SMEs and academia. Headed by
MBDA, the team is focused on producing a solution to a UK Ministry
of Defence (MOD) land forces Indirect Fires requirement for a
24-hour capability to carry out precision attacks across the full
spectrum of conflict and in complex scenarios. This will include
engagement of individual and groups of hard and soft, static,
manoeuvring and mobile surface targets. When launched, the
Loitering Munition can track its intended target for extended
durations and then engage at the optimum moment, thereby improving
the capability effect and reducing the risk of collateral damage.
This is achieved under the control of an operator who receives
imagery from a munition-mounted sensor via a data link.
SELEX Systems Integration’s involvement in
the Fire Shadow Loitering Munition programme builds upon its
expertise developed as the training partner of the UK Thales team
responsible for delivering the UK WATCHKEEPER TUAV programme.
SELEX
Systems Integration Director of Training Solutions, Tony Miklinski,
said: “We are delighted to be at the forefront of this Loitering
Munition programme’s training development project, as it enters its
second phase and moves closer to providing the MOD with its desired
capability.”
