Norwegian Air Force appoints SELEX Systems
Integration to develop web-based F-16 maintenance
training
10 July 2009 – SELEX Systems Integration Ltd, a Finmeccanica
company, is working with the Royal Norwegian Air Force to develop a
distributed learning trial, designed to address the Air Force’s
changing and evermore demanding training requirements.
The six-month programme will convert the existing Technical
Training Package (TTP) emulation to SELEX Systems Integration’s
latest web-enabled emulation technology, as well as adding new
functionality needed to support distance learning. This will be
followed by a classroom-based trial to determine the success of
this new training approach.
The project extends SELEX Systems Integration’s (formerly
VEGA’s) long-term relationship with the Royal Norwegian Air Force,
and builds upon the existing integrated training solution that the
company developed to support type conversion and recurrent training
of F-16 technicians in the Royal Norwegian and Royal Netherlands
Air Forces.
The aim of the work is to develop new web-based functionality
for the F-16 TTP to enable a remote learning environment, making
the most efficient use of instructors whilst maintaining the
quality of the learning experience for the students. The programme
aims to design distributed yet highly interactive training in an
innovative, highly efficient, flexible and accessible way. By
delivering training at the point of use, anywhere in the world,
‘just in time’ learning can help combat skill fade, and enable
students to work through training when and where they want.
At the end of the trial, the Royal Norwegian Air Force will
retain the new capability to deliver distance learning lessons for
those components converted during the trial. The result of the
trial will also help develop knowledge of how future
emulation-based training capabilities should be specified and
procured for more than just the F-16 specific TTP emulation.
SELEX Systems Integration Director of Training Solutions, Tony
Miklinski, said: “Training is moving away from long residential
courses towards ‘just in time’ training where it’s conducted in
small, intense and highly purposeful sessions, immediately prior to
the trainee / technician having to perform a related procedure or
task. This enables training to continue even after students, and
the equipment for which they are responsible, have been deployed.
We believe that the combination of our emulation technology and the
latest web-based technologies can provide financial benefits to the
customer, as well as improve student efficiency and
effectiveness.
“We hope the successful completion of this trial leads to a
fully functioning transformation of the existing F-16 TTP training
system into a distributed, remote training capability, and develops
useful experience and authority to inform subsequent training for
other platform procurements such as future combat, rotary wing and
multi-engaged aircraft.”
