APST: Integrated Training Solution
The UK RAF and SELEX Systems Integration (formerly VEGA) worked
together to develop the Aircraft Propulsion Systems Trainer (APST)
by combining PC-based emulation with physically modelled
equipment.
Challenge
RAF Cosford required assistance in meeting the training
challenge in maintaining the next generation of propulsion systems,
such as those on Eurofighter.
How SELEX Systems Integration Helped
The APST was developed to facilitate the teaching of the
fundamental principles of propulsion and provide practical training
in the running of fault diagnosis of generic, digitally controlled
aircraft propulsion systems. It allows both basic and further
training.
The APST consists of a full sized Aircraft Model based on the
Eurofighter and the Tornado. It has a generic and modern fast-jet
aircraft complete with a fitted cockpit and engine installation;
relevant cockpit controls; instrumentation; maintenance panels;
engine control units; and engine adjustment and test equipment.
The model is linked to a real-time PC based simulation of a
digitally controlled propulsion system and has a seat shaker to
provide students with a realistic simulation of the cockpit
environment during engine ground runs. A ground maintenance
intercom allows communication between students inside the cockpit
and those performing tasks outside the aircraft. A remote
instructor workstation, provided on a laptop, allows the instructor
to monitor student performance and inject faults without the
student’s awareness.
The Computer Based Training classrooms consist of 18 dual screen
student workstations and an instructor workstation. Each student is
provided with a virtual representation of the aircraft, driven by
exactly the same simulation software as the aircraft model.
An Instructor Demonstration System is used to present APST to
students using two large screen displays or ceiling mounted
projectors. Multimedia materials are used to illustrate fundamental
concepts. Maintenance procedures from real Air Publications are
provided for additional realism. These have been tailored to
reflect the instrumentation and ground equipment of APST.
SELEX Systems Integration was responsible for the courseware
design, graphics, integration and design of the hardware
interface. SELEX Systems Integration has also implemented a
stringent Integrated Logistics Support programme to ensure a high
level of reliability, availability and maintainability.
