Medium Support Helicopter Aircrew Training Facility (MSHATF)

SELEX Systems Integration (formerly VEGA) is providing a comprehensive totally integrated computer-based training solution for the Medium Support Helicopter Aircrew Training Facility (MSHATF) at RAF Benson to support the training of UK RAF crews and third party air forces. This project was one of the first UK Military training facilities procured as a Private Finance Initiative Contract. CAE Aircrew Training Services plc Electronics of Montreal is the Prime Contractor for the facility and training service delivery.

Challenge

The UK Royal Air Force required a highly effective yet safe and environmentally friendly solution to satisfy the initial type conversion, recurrent and operational training and mission rehearsal requirements for the crews of their Chinook, Puma and Merlin helicopters.

How SELEX SI Helped

SELEX Systems Integration provided a full set of ground school courseware for use in both the basic technical ground school and the operational ground school of each aircraft type. It teaches aircrew the principles, components and operation of all the aircraft systems. It is also used to provide continuation and refresher training.

SELEX Systems Integration has installed 12 student workstations and an instructor workstation in each of the four classrooms at the MSHATF. Two further classrooms have been fitted with instructor workstations.

All workstations at the training facility are networked, enabling real-time tracking of student performance and maintenance of courseware. For each aircraft the courseware comprises:

  • 75 hours of student self paced Computer Based Training
  • 25 hours of instructor led media
  • 20 Emulations of aircraft equipments

Value Delivered

The MSHATF represents the most up-to-date fully integrated computer based training facility available in the classroom environment. SELEX Systems Integration will be supporting the facility over the coming decade. This ensures that the courseware can rapidly reflect aircraft and operational changes and associated hardware will be maintained to the highest standards.
